Taming the Tongue

James: 3 : 1-12

Matt : 12 : 36-37

1.       The tongue is small, but very powerful ( v3-5)

a.       One remark can ruin a  reputation,  cause years of heart ache, and embarrass and humiliate.

b.      It can also stir up pride in ourselves , by boasting and bragging on ourselves.

Psalms : 52: 1-5

2.       The tongue is very dangerous (V6-8)

a.       Harsh words can destroy relationships and people.  Eg. Karen Carpenter (Prov 18:21)

b.      Gossip can drive people from the church.

3.       The tongue is very reveling (9-12)

a.       James doesn’t explain these verses because they are so obvious.

b.      We need to examine our words and see if we are falling into these categories ( Luke: 6:45)
